#41 Thursday Thoughts: How Do You Bring Your Loved One Into Your Birthday?

Katie and I mainly celebrate Mum in our birthdays by talking about her, reminiscing and sometimes going through our memory boxes.

How do you celebrate your loved one on your birthday?

  1. Not much celebration here; Anita and I take each other to our favorite restaurants (for take-out during covid hibernation). The rest of the family is too far away, and so get a card and a call. 😊

  2. My grandfather died right around my birthday. I do think of him on my birthday, but I prefer to think of him more on his own birthday, which so happens to be a few weeks later. It’s less because it’s my birthday and more that I want to focus more on the fact that he lived rather than the day that he died. Similarly, my close friend died on my sister’s wedding day. I prefer to focus my remembrance of her on her own birthday rather than on the day she died, which is my sister and brother-in-law’s anniversary. It is more customary in my circles to remember the deceased on the day they died, but for me, I would rather celebrate the fact that they lived. They are no longer with us, which is hard, but I’m grateful for the time we had.
